Premium Pellet is a wood fibre pellet producer located in Vanderhoof, BC. The plant opened in 2001 and is wholly owned and operated by Nechako Lumber Co.

The plant produces 170,000 tonnes of pellets from white wood waste (sawdust, shavings, and fines) with raw material from Nechako Lumber Co. and other sources in the region. The vast majority of pellets produced are sold in bulk to overseas markets, but a small amount is packaged for the local home heating market.

Premium Pellet is your choice for environmentally friendly, premium quality pellets. As part of Sinclar’s focus on driving value from the full fibre basket, we are recovering fibre from harvesting areas that do not meet our sawmill specifications and directing that fibre for pelletizing in our plant.

Premium Pellet strives to run an efficient and prosperous operation in the woods, the office, and in its milling facilities. For this reason, Premium Pellet has positioned itself to remain viable, provide local employment, and build for the future.

Production Availability and Volume

Premium Pellet has a current production capability of 170,000 tonnes of high quality, premium grade wood pellets annually. The pellet mill is positioned on a major highway and a major rail line and has been designed for efficient operations, shipping, and handling.

The vast majority of pellets produced are sold in bulk to overseas markets, but a small amount is packaged in 40lb bags for the local home heating market.

Environmental Stewardship

Premium Pellet  ensures a constant, reliable, and environmentally friendly fiber stream by sourcing wood waste fiber from community sawmills and recovers non sawlog fiber from harvesting operations. Sinclar Group manages its forest land base to not only meet, but exceed all provincial forest laws and regulations.

  • Planning, harvesting, and reforestation ensures sustainability of the forest resources while addressing hydrology, wildlife, aquatic life, biodiversity, forest health, recreation visual quality, cultural resources, and other industrial values.
  • Sinclar Group operations are certified to the Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification, Chain of Custody (PEFC CoC) and the Sustainable Biomass Production (SBP) standards.

Why Wood Pellets?

Using wood pellets for heating has been proven to provide a cleaner burn than other wood fuels. Since Sinclar Group manages our forest resources in a sustainable manner and pellets are made from fibre that would otherwise be waste, wood pellets are a renewable resource. Unlike coal, oil and other fossil fuels, burning wood pellets does not contribute to climate changes through emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases. The growth of the fibre used to produce our pellets takes in the same amount of carbon as is emitted by the burning of pellets or decomposition of wood in nature; as such, the net emission of carbon-dioxide is practically zero. Other emissions from wood pellets are low in relation to coal, oil and other fossil fuels. Emissions of nitrogen oxides are similar to fossil fuels; however, emissions of sulfur dioxides are considerably lower.

Why Premium Pellet?

Premium Pellet Ltd. has carefully engineered our manufacturing process in order to develop consistent production of the highest quality wood pellet. White wood waste, in the form of sawdust and chip fines, is separated from the bark in the sawmill. It is then transferred directly via a high pressure blow line to a storage bin at the manufacturing center. White wood waste is also collected from the planer mill and transferred directly to the same storage bin. The white wood waste is then dried in a biomass fired dryer. The dried material passes through a screen and hammer mill to create consistent particle sizes. The particles are transferred to the pellet mill where they are preconditioned with steam for extrusion through dies to form the wood pellets. The hot pellets are then cooled in a counter flow cooler to rest the lignin and form a hard, stable pellet. In all areas of handling, dust is recovered and used in the dryers for fuel. The completed pellets are then stored in bags or bulk, ready to deliver to market. Quality assurance is monitored closely throughout all stages of the manufacturing process. We start with careful handling and direct transfer of the white wood waste to provide a clean supply of materials for processing. Our monitoring of moistures levels, fines content, bulk density, and proper pellet size are integral parts of producing our high quality, premium grade wood pellet fuel.
